Lolitas

The Lolitas are one of the best sites in Tokyo. This is a photo of a grown woman, probably 5'8" or so. There are swarms of grown women who dress like this. There's no real reason why they do this but it's one of my favorite subcultures (of many, many subcultures) to show visitors. Sociologists say the Lolitas (which aren't meant to be sexual at all) have to do with the Japanese economy...The decade-long recession has produced adults who want to remain children, thus avoiding the Japan Inc. worldview of selling your soul to your company for the rest of your natural life, that their parents' generation devoted themselves to and then ended up failing them during tough times. I don't know if that's true, but it sounds good. And how else do you explain a 30-year old woman dressing like Strawberry Shortcake every day? If you have any theories, please let me know...
